The evolution of tank games since Combat on the Atari 2600 is quite evident in Armored Fist 3. While Combat was a two-dimensional moving shooter, Armored Fist 3 is a full-on tank simulation. If you think all you have to do is point and shoot, you're in for a big surprise. Unless you've driven real tanks at some point in your life, it's unlikely you will jump into this game and play with any success. Aiming and firing your tanks' guns are minor parts of the simulation. You have to know how to control your tank, how to load the weapons, which weapons work best in different scenarios, and how to avoid enemy fire. Armored Fist 3 requires practice.
Graphically, Armored Fist 3 is solid. The designers at NovaLogic have put together another sharp game. I was amazed at the detail of the 3D environments, the use of color, and the multiple camera angles available. You actually feel like you're in a tank. I like it. As realistic as the graphics are, sound is even better. The hum of the engine, the sound of metal on metal as the missiles load, and the whine of the swinging turret combine for a superb soundtrack. Good graphics can create a good simulation, but good sound completes it.
While I found Armored Fist 3 fairly enjoyable, I also found it very difficult. If you're looking for a mindless shooter, don't look at Armored Fist 3. This isn't the kind of game you play to blow off steam. This one makes you think. It's the kind of game you have to love to play. Armored Fist 3 is also extremely long, sucking hours of your time before you realize it. I found some of Armored Fist 3's mission to be entirely too long and complex, making it hard to stay focused when traveling so much between targets. If Armored Fist 3 has a flaw, it's that there are times when there isn't enough action.
Overall, Armored Fist 3 is a great tank simulation. If you love tanks and you love combat, then Armored Fist 3 is a good game to have in your video game library. Once you crawl inside the iron skin of your tank, getting out is hard.
