Bubble Dizzy eschews the usual arcade adventure format of Dizzy games, instead being a simple action game.

You must guide Dizzy through the underwater worlds, collecting pearls as you go. Dizzy starts at the bottom of the sea, and you have to get him to the top. You do this by jumping across bubbles, which only have a limited time before bursting. Enemies to avoid include sharks, octopuses and swordfish. Dizzy has limited oxygen, but more can be collected from O2 canisters. After completing a level, you get a bonus for the amount of pearls you collected and the amount of oxygen you have left.

Dizzy is a game series that has developed a bad name on this site because of its poor gameplay. I therefore feel it necessary to fix this by adding a Dizzy game that is fun, addictive, simple and above all good! This game deserves a 5-point score, no argument.

What is it then that separates this Dizzy game from the rest? Well as arcade games go, this one is as simple as they get while still looking great! You play Dizzy the egg, but instead of jumping around solving puzzles and getting frustrated because of the egg's tendency to break, you will now dive underwater for gems, pearls and other nice items on the bottom of the sea. Unfortunately for you, eggs can't swim, so unless you can get to the surface before your air-supply runs out you will die. So, how do you get upwards? Simple - by using bubbles as free taxi-rides. By jumping onto a bubble you are transported up a little bit, before the bubble bursts under you. To reach the surface you will need to jump between different bubbles, rock formations and whales. The whale is the only friendly creature in the sea. All the others will harm you (i.e. steal some of your air). To finish each level you need to ride a bubble out of the water.

It may sound easy, but you will find it more challenging than you might think. It sometimes feels like all roads are closed, except the way back down to the bottom. To ease the task there are air-tanks and extra lives placed around the different levels. As for graphics, Dizzy Bubble has the best and most colorful of all the Dizzy games. The sounds and music are also very soothing. All in all they create a perfect atmosphere for the game.

But what about playability? Controls are as easy as they could be. You use the directional keys. That is in fact all you'll need. Up is jump. Simple. This game was made with one thing in mind: to make a great time-killer when you don't have the time to play a bigger game. Perfect for the workplace! The high score I have given the game derives from the fact that this game alone saves all the other Dizzy games from giving the series a bad name, for its simple controls, good idea, and the fact that it is a truly beautiful game (both regarding sight and sound).

Part of the Dizzy games Series

Fans of Spectrum computers would recall that Codemasters' Dizzy series were some of the best games ever made for that computer. Created by a quirky pair of designers who call themselves The Oliver Twins, the series feature Dizzy, prince of the egg-shaped people (okay, they're actually eggs) who are, quite ingeniously, called yolkfolk. The games are either arcade adventure, or arcade-style puzzlers. The series is memorable for eccentric level design, great music, and wonderful cartoon-style sense of humor. There were 15 Dizzy games made for the Spectrum, only 7 of which were ported to the PC.

Bubble Dizzy was the last arcade-style Dizzy game released for the PC. This time, Dizzy was taking a boat journey to visit Daisy his girlfriend and give her a pearl necklace. However, a short while into the voyage Dizzy discovered her wasn't on a passenger boat; he was on a pirate ship captained by none other than the evil Captain Blackheart! Blackheart stole the pearls and forced Dizzy to walk the plank. As Dizzy sank into the mysterious ocean caverns he knew there was only one thing for it: he had to head for the surface, and fast.

Gameplay in Bubble Dizzy is a refreshing break from the mundane Pac-Man ripoffs Fast Food and Kwik Snax. You must help Dizzy get to the surface by riding on the bubbles. You only have a limited amount of oxygen (although more can be collected) and if it runs out, then you lose a life. You must also collect the pearls from the sea bed and ledges so that Dizzy can give Daisy a pearl necklace at last. Of course, there are also creatures to watch out for-running into them reduces your oxygen.

Bubble Dizzy is one of the better (and more original) Dizzy arcade games, but it is still much too easy - you'll probably be able to complete it on your second or third try. Even so, the refreshing game concept and flawless controls, along with attractive graphics, will keep both Dizzy and arcade fans happy for the few hours it take to complete.

Dizzy is going to visit his girfriend Daisy with a nice present for her - a pearl necklace. But something went wrong during the trip - the ship on which Dizzy was traveling sunk and Dizzy is in trouble.

Your goal in this simple game is to reach the surface by jumping on the bubbles. You will also have to collect pearls and keep an eye on oxygen level. Pretty original and easy game.
