The world that we know is gone. In the ashes, civilization struggles to rebuild itself. Fallout drops the player in a role of survivor who has one tough mission to complete. The premise of this post-apocalyptic RPG is simple and easy to understand. As a resident in the local bomb shelter, the player is informed that someone forgot to pack a spare water filter. Guess who is called to duty...

Society (those who have been confined to Vault 13 -- the only society you know) is depending on you. Guiding your character through the wasteland that has become Earth, it is up to you to find the water purifier. Without it, all of the friends and family you know as well as everyone in the vault will slowly begin to die off. The story then progresses into what is the rest of the game. Along the way, you'll complete side missions and take a few detours resulting in a very interesting driving story as well as unique and enjoyable sub-plots and scenarios.

As you progress throughout the world of Fallout, the player will encounter rogue characters and giant scorpions. Using a wide variety of weapons such as the basic knife and pistol, you'll have to defend yourself and fend off your enemies. Defeating your enemies results in you gaining experience points and level-ups. Like any RPG, the higher the level your character is, the more powerful he becomes. When you get hurt, you'll have to use healing items, such as kits or antidotes (for poison). You'll also come across all sorts of items to pick up, some of which are incorporated into solving mind-bending puzzles.

Some PC role-playing games are disappointing and dull but Fallout breaks the mold and puts players in a believable and somewhat realistic fantasy world. The setting is dark and dismal, which is to be expected considering that civilization was nearly destroyed. The game play is smooth, using action points for movement and combat and the inventory system is easily managed. Fallout has one of the best character development systems of any computerized role-playing game and the graphics and story make for an excellent gaming experience.

Graphics: The visuals are fitting for a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by chaos.

Sound: The music and effects sound as if they were recorded in the aftermath of world destruction.

Enjoyment: Fallout makes me wish for doomsday.

Replay Value: One time through will probably be enough for most gamers, but because the story is so enjoyable, diehard fans may opt to go through it a second time.

A devastating atomic war wiped out almost the entire population of the Earth. The civilization as we know it has been destroyed. The Earth has become a huge radioactive area. Only the most courageous ones dare to dwell on the surface, forming communities and building new cities. Many people live in Vaults, huge underground dwellings. You play the role of an inhabitant of Vault 13. Recently, the water purification controller chip was broken. Without clean water, the people of the Vault cannot survive. You are sent to retrieve a chip from another Vault. And you venture outside, to face a dangerous world and to find your place in it.

Fallout is a RPG that utilizes a character development system called S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (the word is formed from the first letters of the game's most important character attributes). You can customize your character's parameters and skills, making him a strong melee fighter, a computer freak, a charismatic leader, a skillful sniper, and many more. You can specialize in various types of weapons, become proficient in conversations with people, etc. The game world offers a non-linear exploration: you can either follow the main story or perform one of the many sub-quests, visiting the game's locations in your preferred order. The game utilizes a turn-based combat system. Your party members (if you recruit any) are controlled by the computer AI. Each action (movement, attack, using a healing item, etc.) costs you action points; once they are depleted, your turn ends.
