Games in the Who Is Oscar Lake? series are designed to teach language by immersing the player in a foreign-speaking environment. The player solves a point-and-click graphic adventure mystery entirely in a foreign language. All of the in-game characters are voiced by native speakers who only communicate in the foreign language. Several built in tools make it easy for the player to translate unfamiliar words and phrases, helping to keep the game moving and avoid unnecessary frustration. Since the game progresses according to success in solving the mystery, the player advances through the game (and the lesson) at his of her own pace. By encouraging the player to interact in a dynamic environment instead of passively repeating vocabulary and phrases, a the Who Is Oscar Lake? titles aim to provide more active, effective means for learning a second (or third) language.
Who is Oscar Lake? is a point-and-click adventure game with FMV sequences that aims to teach a foreign language. Several versions are available, both for the language to be learned (e.g. German, Spanish and French), and the learner's mother tongue.
The player assumes the role of a traveller to a foreign country, and is accused of stealing a priceless diamond. The police thinks the player is Oscar Lake, a notorious thief, and only through thorough investigations and interactive conversations can his innocence be proven. All conversations are in the foreign language, and have several options that lead to a different outcome and eventually different endings. The game has over 1200 vocabulary words.
Built-in tools like a dictionary provide help for the player, and it is possible to record voices and listen to native speakers pronounce words and phrases.
