Three Vikings, Eric the Swift, Olaf the Stout and Baleog the Fierce, were kidnapped by the alien Tomator, the evil Croutonian ruler, who is collecting unique life forms to display in his gallery. The three Vikings will have to combine their unique skills to defeat Tomator, as well as a vast array of aliens, robots, giant snails, big lizards and more.
The Lost Vikings is a side-scrolling platform puzzle game with a twist. Instead of one character who can jump, run, shoot, collect items, flip switches and so on, there are three different characters, each with his own skills. Eric the Swift can jump, run and bash through walls with his tough helmet. Olaf the Stout has a shield which can block attacks, function as an air glider or as a step to stand on. Baleog the Fierce can shoot things with his arrows (including switches) or kill things with his sword. The player has to use the three Vikings as a team if he wants to get past the increasingly difficult levels and puzzles.
The player controls one Viking at a time, but can switch between them at any point. The Vikings have limited space in their inventory which they can use to keep various items. Each Viking has three health points, and if he loses them all from confrontations with dangers, he dies (some threats kill instantly), and the level must be restarted.
What happens when a group of overseas explorers is sucked onto a giant space ship while peacefully hunting in a nearby forest? Well, you get one of the best side-scrolling puzzle games ever made, a true jewel of the gaming world.
The Lost Vikings was released in 1992 by Interplay Entertainment as a single-floppy, single-player game with great graphics for its time. The key to this game's enchanting beauty, however, is not in its graphics but rather in its gameplay.
The main characters of the game are three Viking warriors - Erik the Swift, Baleog the Fierce, and Olaf the Stout - whose first goal is to find a way off the strange ship onto which they were brought. After completing the initial task, our heroes are taken to different periods of time with one goal: escape alive and go home!
The only way to pass each level is to bring all three Vikings to the exit point. What complicates this (or makes it easier) is that each of our three heroes has his own set of abilities: Erik can run, jump, and bash his head through some walls in the game; Baleog can kill enemies from a long distance using his bow or from a short distance using his sword, and also use his bow to hit otherwise unreachable switches; Olaf can use his sturdy shield to hide himself and the others from enemy attacks (from the sides and from above) and to float down from high places without harm.
After you pass each level, you will get a password which is necessary if you exit the game and wish to continue later on from that point.
As for the game itself, it is a pure 5. The graphics are fantastic, the gameplay is easy, the difficulty is just right, the sound is good, and I quote (and confirm): "addictiveness is through the roof!" ... and the level of addictiveness IS through the roof!
This is an entertaining little action/puzzle game. Your mission is to control three Vikings around on levels filled with traps and monsters. Each Viking has his own special ability. The first can run and jump, the second has a big shield to stop lasers and similar things and the third is the fighter using a sword.
You switch around between them, using their different abilities to finish the level. Sometimes you need to kill a monster or block a death ray or jump to a switch to open a door. The game starts out fairly easy and then gets harder and harder. Each level is very detailed and you have to try many times on certain levels before you find out what to do in order to complete the level. At some levels you have to be very creative in order to complete the levels but this is also what makes the game fun to play.
The game has quite detailed graphics, which is also essential as there are several small switches you have to look out for and can't afford to miss in order to complete the game. The best thing in the game is that all 3 Vikings are needed on each level. The Lost Vikings is one of the better and most unique puzzle games and is highly recommended if you are into this genre.
