Wishbone, the Amazing Odyssey is an amusing and intelligent CD-ROM game for children eight and up. After an amusing start up where Wishbone explains the new technology that will bring the book to life and is sucked into the machine, the player is asked to help Wishbone escape from the machine by getting him to the end of the story.
Comedic relief is provided by Eurylochus, one of Odysseus' men. He claims to be Odysseus' bravest and most trustworthy men, but always has an excuse for not doing things to help. When asked to help bring the chest of booty from Troy on board, he claims to have a sprained thumb. Eventually, when Wishbone orders him to help, he does, but kids will chuckle at his amusing and improbable excuses for not doing things.
The game handles most problems in a non-violent way, and when violence is implicit in the story, it is handled in off-screen action. Along the way, players will have the chance to pick up items that will be useful further on in the game.
Game controls are simple, and can be accessed from the main screen. At any time, the player can access the game library filled with information about Ancient Greece and the Odyssey itself. The book itself is included in condensed form and has Wishbone's comments included in the text. The text is written in an easy and child-accessible style.
Graphics: The Graphics are excellent, especially those of Wishbone he almost looks as if he has been digitized. The other characters are less realistic.
Sound: Wishbone's voice is clean and clear, as are the others, and the sounds and music sound wonderful.
Enjoyment: The game itself is challenging enough even for older kids, and will delight everyone.
Replay Value: Once you have solved the adventure, there is very little incentive to go back and do it again save to see Wishbone in action again.
Wishbone And The Amazing Odyssey is a lesson about Homer's ŻOdyssey+ in which Wishbone (a Jack Russell terrier from a PBS educational television show) plays the role of Odysseus. Wishbone must re-enact Homer's ŻOdyssey+ in order to return to his own time. To achieve this goal, Wishbone must interact with characters and the surroundings, taking command of his crew, and sailing around the ancient Greece while making all the classic stops outlined in Homer's poem.
Additionally, the game features the Knowledge Vault, an online reference about Homer's ŻOdyssey+ that includes a glossary, time line, and a list of characters and locations.
