Allan Border's Cricket screenshots:

One of the few computer games recreating cricket, the traditional summer pastime in many English-speaking countries. The game had different licenses with well-known cricketers in different countries. It was Audiogenic's second cricket game, 8 years after Graham Gooch's Test Match.

All the international sides are present, with the chance to change the player data and choose the team yourself. Test match and limited-overs matches are available, with 1 or 2 innings per team, and you can turn the Leg-before-wicket dismissal off, which makes the game easier to understand.

There are 3 skill levels - Amateur, Professional and World Class. The bowling involves positioning a cursor to place the bowl, then controlling the speed/spin (depending on the type of bowler selected). Batting involves timing one of the many available shots, and fielding is largely automated.

Probably the world's best cricket game until Electronic Arts' EA Sports version years later, Allan Border's Cricket is also known as Graham Gooch World Class Cricket, Jonty Rhodes II World Class Cricket, and probably a myriad other names depending on where the game was released. Aside from different introductory picture featuring different cricket stars (Jonty Rhodes in the South African version of the game, for instance), all versions of the game feature the same great gameplay.

Allan Border's Cricket lets you play a variety of games, from one day matches to test cricket. The game has team listing for all nine test-playing nations, as well as those in the Australia Cricket Shield. There also is a feature to edit your teams, incase you want to update the lists and averages. The Australian version (i.e. this one) features all the Sheffield Shield Sides (Australia) with authentic batting and bowling averages, plus Australia, New Zealand, West Indies and England teams, all of which can be customized to your heart's content. You can play against a friend or good computer AI, at Amateur, Professional, or World Class level; you can even watch two computer sides play each other.

On the pitch, the game allows you to control the bowlers, the batsman and the field placings, all of whom are animated very realistically. Intuitive mouse-based controls (similar to computer golf games) allow you to make many kinds of batting strokes including the sweep, hook, cover drive, and square cut. You can vary the speed and the amount of spin or swing, and even choose handedness of your batsman and bowlers. Choose from the pre-set field placings or create your own; fielders automatically change over to a left-handed batsman, or a new bowler. The list of options goes on, and the game's fantastic graphic detail including player shadows, and occasional showers of rain add icing to the cake. Suffice to say that no cricket fan should be without Allan Border's Cricket, one of the best sport games of all time that put Audiogenic on the map of great game developers.

Allan Border's Cricket, named after one of the greatest cricketers in history, just stands up to its name. Its graphics is excellent considering the year in which it was created! Gameplay is also great.. i feel much better than EA's Cricket'99, even though the graphics aren't quite the same. Anyway, the game was best one available (for cricket) till 1996, graphics wise. The players are too old... may have to edit that. One great thing is that this game allows you to edit the players and teams, the number of teams that could be generated is unlimited! Also there are many configuration options, like turning on/off LBW... One Day match or Test match and so on. A must download for all cricket fans.
