Alley 19 bowling features game characters dressed in leather jackets and bobby socks, and other icons from 1950s and 1960s television shows. Four playable characaters are available (two men and two women), each with a different bowling style and winning reaction. Players choose a ball color and weight, and can enter their own names. Controls deal with setting your aim with the provided guide, then sliding the mouse forward to roll the ball. The faster you slide the mouse, the harder the ball rolls.
Many consider bowling to be a boring, old-fashioned sport better left on ESPN in the middle of the night. Yes, it's true that bowling is not a new sport . . . but boring? Not really. With bowling lanes quickly disappearing from the landscape, Alley 19 Bowling, by Starplay, has placed a bowling lane in your computer.
You can play as or against up to four opponents in the simulated bowling lane, and choose the color of your ball. Once at the lane, move your mouse to the right to pick up the ball -- an action that is not very smooth and looks almost jerky with a trackball or Kensington TurboMouse. Once you have the ball, move the mouse back towards you to move to the lane until you find the place you want to stand. To bowl, hold down the mouse button and move the mouse forward. A slight wiggle left or right puts some English on the throw, curving the ball to the left or right. Players get two throws, unless they strike. The game takes care of marking scores.
Those are the basics. However, you will find that actually throwing strikes and spares takes much longer than you might think. It may take months before you bowl a perfect 300 score, but when you do . . . And while this game isn't "exactly" like bowling, you don't have to pay any fees, or wear those dorky bowling shoes. If you have ever wondered what bowling is about, Alley 19 Bowling will give you more than a taste -- it's a whole mouthful.
