Continuing their series of baseball simulations for the PC, Electronic Arts' annual title features improvements and enhancements in varying areas of play over previous editions. Triple Play 98 has both a MLB and MLBPA license that provides use of actual names and leads to signature pitching and batting styles.
The game offers two in-booth announcers, one for play-by-play and the other on color commentary. More than 20 camera views provide perspectives from nearly all angles on the playing field. With the inclusion of the expansion teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums and teams are represented.
Triple Play 98 is based on the 1996 player and team statistics and features the 1997 team rosters. A new feature allows for inter-league play in addition to eight possible play modes. These modes include Home Run Derby, All-Star, Playoff, Practice, Season, Series, LAN and modem. Three skill levels are offered, all-star, pro and rookie, and the gameplay is adjustable for arcade style or realistic simulation.
Other features of the game include more than 50 statistics that are tracked during the course of gameplay, player creation and trades, scouting reports, hit charts and 3D rendered environments.
