In the tradition of the game Beetlejuice, Gremlins 2 is an arcade game in which you have to go around a building shooting gremlins and collecting all sorts of items. The game's features include an alarm system, two types of weapons and various kinds of scenery.
A much worse adaptation of the hit movie license than the platform game of the same name by Elite Systems, Hi-Tech's Gremlins 2: The New Batch is tedious to the extreme. The goal is simple: rid a building of pesky gremlins. Armed with a flashlight, you will make your way through dozens of arduous floors, moving up to the next once a floor is cleared of gremlins. Each floor looks almost identical to the last one, with the same assortment of hamburgers (restore health), batteries (power flashlight), and bonus items to collect. There is only a few gremlins on the lower floors, who can be "killed" quickly by shining the flashlight at them, but you will encounter the meaner sort once you get beyond level 15 or so. Fortunately, you will come across a camera that serves as a better weapon against these guys.
There's really not much to recommend the game for. If you are fan of the movie, the game provides very little plot development (i.e. nil) and excitement to keep you coming back. The levels look alike, the monsters look alike, gameplay is very claustrophobic, and graphics is below average for its time. Play Elite Systems' version instead if you want to try a Gremlins game.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch was quite a successful movie, but the game is quite bad if you ask me. It is simply too hard and the entertainment factor is below average. You just run around, dodge creepy mutated gremlins and fire at them with the flashlight (or some other weird weapons in the later stages). This should have been better...
A surprisingly nice game. Basically you set off to defeat the Gremlins. Based on the second movie you are making your way through a building that's being hold by the evil Gremlins. Picking up 'power-ups' for your health and batteries for your weapon and always searching for the last gremlins on the level you are currently 'cleaning up' - you can choose yourself if you take out the levels one after another starting with the easy levels at the bottom or if you take the elevator right into the action at the uipper levels. Not bad, really. The only thing I really don't understand are the graphics - I mean... they are not up to date for a game from 1991. They COULD have tried a little harder, it would have contributed to create a certain atmosphere which is a thing that somehow lacks in this game. Anyway, still fun.
