Set in the claustrophobic confines of an atomic icebreaking vessel shipwrecked near the North Pole, Cryostasis puts players in the shoes of Alexander Nesterov, a Russian meteorologist sent to investigate strange occurrences on the submarine. Once aboard, Nesterov discovers that the captain and the crewmen have seemingly died of exposure, only to be transformed into bizarre creatures by the extreme cold. Nesterov has a unique "Mental Echo" ability that lets him travel back and alter events from the ship's past, but he can only use it on former crewmembers whose memories have frozen along with the rest of their body. Cryostasis makes use of a unique temperature dynamic, whereby players must keep Nesterov warm enough by finding sources of heat such as lamps, ovens, and heaters. The strange creatures on the submarine, however, can only thrive in the subzero temperatures, so they attack the only warm-blooded creature remaining on the ship. Gamers are left with the task of fending off truly cold-blooded enemies, all while attempting to reheat each section of the ship.
