Aliens attempting to steal the World Cup have crashed as they tried to flee, and the Cup has been broken, its pieces scattered around the globe. As Soccer Kid, you must retrieve it. During your journey you will visit Britain, Italy, Russia, Japan, and finally the States.
Soccer Kid is a platform game with some unique elements. As the name implies, you have to kill your enemies with your ball. Football-style tricks of keeping the ball in the air and under control are especially useful - headers and overhead kicks can be played with practice. You gain access to the pieces by collecting 11 Player Cards across each world.
There is a saving feature that gives you the ability to save between each country (but not between individual levels).
This is the story of Soccer Kid: "The year is 1994; deep in outer space the alien Scab is scouring the galaxy, searching the planets for trophies, to add to his collection. Scab's radar detects the perfect specimen on the planet Earth! Wasting no time he fires his beam to collect his prize - The World Cup! Disaster! As the cup travels into space it strikes a passing asteroid smashing the cup into 5 pieces. Each piece falling back to Earth scattered across the globe. Many miles away the Soccer Kid is at home watching this on his TV. Sparing not a thought for his safety, he decides to find and return the trophy in time for The World Cup final. Ready for action dressed in his best kit, with his ball under his arm, nothing will stop him on his quest to return the cup."
Soccer Kid is an arcade game in which, as you can see above, you must find all scattered pieces of the cup before the finals! Your quest won't be simple, if you thought it would. You will have to travel across the Earth in order to find all 5 pieces of the cup and combine them together. You will meet many enemies during your voyage, and the only way to kill them is to hit them with the ball you have with you. Of course you will blow many of your balls, it happens even to the best. On every level you have limited number of balls, depending on level length. When you loose your ball, or blow it, just hold space bar, until another ball shows up!
Graphics are somehow like in cartoons, and I liked it! The music is really good, e.g. when you begin a new level, you will hear a whistle, just like on the start of a football match.
The only thing I didn't like was the option to save. You can't save often, only after 2 or more levels, and it's not always easy to reach next savepoint.
A mark 4 then, due to the few savepoints and linear levels. Still, this game is a great way to spend surplus time.
A fun, highly underrated platformer from Krisalis, and perhaps the only entry in our "Football (Soccer" theme that doesn't belong in the Sport genre ;) MobyGames has the lowdown" on this one:
"Soccer Kid is an unique platform game featuring smooth scrolling VGA graphics, and an all digital original MOD soundtrack. You are Soccer Kid, and you have to recover the broken World Cup pieces scattered around the globe. During your journey you will visit Britain, Italy, Russia, Japan, and finally the States.
In Soccer Kid, as the name implies, you have to kill your enemies with your ball. You can do a lot of trick kicks that are really fun to watch. There is a saving feature that gives you the ability to save between each country (but not between individual levels)."
With a unique premise, fun levels, and great gameplay, Soccer Kid is highly recommended for action and soccer fans.
