Ah yes, it's vacation time! You've planned a wonderful trip for yourself down in the South Pacific, away from the normal daily grind and rat race. You board your plane, and everything goes smoothly...until the engines fail. The plane spirals downward and crash lands on a remote jungle island. As you look around, you realize that you're the only survivor of the crash. You must now find a way off this island, which will be no easy feat. You see, it just so happens that THIS island is populated by vacationing demons and zombies, ready to tear you to pieces!
Isle of the Dead is an adventure/corridor shooter hybrid. In the action sequences, you must slaughter, blast, maim and kill the hordes of zombies that are out for your blood. The action plays out using id Software's Wolfenstein gaming engine. The adventure sequences are delivered in a point-and-click interface. This part of the game requires you to have a keen sense of observation to look out for inventory items and weapons that you may need, traps that will kill you in the blink of an eye and various puzzles.
Will you be able to defeat the zombies, rescue any survivors (if there ARE any survivors), get to the bottom of the situation and stop whoever is making the dead walk, all while trying to escape from this Isle of the Dead? Try if you dare!
Isle of the Dead is a mixture between a 1st Person Shooter and a Classic Point&Click Adventure. While walking through a level ind 1st Person Shooter mode you can examine certain areas closer and the game switches to adventure mode. The shooter part's 3D Engine is on Wolfenstein 3-D level. The Story (from the box): You're a passenger on a South Pacific island-hopping adventure. Crashing on the beach of a jungle island, you are the sole survivor lost in paradise... or is it? You must hunt for survival items, weapons and a way to get off the island. Be prepared to do a lot of blasting, hacking and slashing... or die! Hideous zombies, vicious wolves and other horror await you if you dare!
Blood! Lot's of blood. Man, I barely remember playing this beauty back many years ago, but I apparently didn't think much of it. Wow, was I wrong. This is a first person hack-and-slash played in a 3D environment, from the time before the term "first person shooter" was coined.
What do you mean, "What am I rambling about?"
Isle Of The Dead! That's what I'm talking about. Isle Of The Dead appears to be part hack-and-slash, and part adventure. The graphics are really good in some places for such an old game, if you can look past the flat surfaces.
The only weapon I have found is the machete, useful for hacking through the jungle and the soft flesh of misshapen zombies! Other items, such as coconuts, banana and first-aid kits restore your health.
The music and sound effects are also good and add to the game's playability. Creatures are polite enough to alert you to their approach by grunting or howling.
Isle Of The Dead is controlled using the mouse for looking and moving, but you can also move using the arrow keys or a joystick. Esc will display the various keys you can use, such as "S" to save and "L" to load.
It might cost you an arm and a leg - literally - but Isle of the Dead is one old game you should be dying to try!
